My point is, if you depend on the limiter to prevent clipping, it's compressing elements of your mix together in a very distinct way (brickwall compressing), and thus unless you know exactly how to mix into a limiter (without depending on it to make up for lack of mixing skill), I would say take everything off your master while you mix. Personally I think it's a good habit to get into to learn to get your mix sounding well 'mixed' first by using eq's, busses, etc and then start putting stuff on the master as you get the track ready for pumping up the volume and glueing everything together. If the argument is against clipping, just turn the faders down.Īfter you get the mix down, then I'd start messing with the master (or leave it to your mastering engineer). That way nothing clips, as it's all well below 0db. I mean, just turn your interface volume up, and mix a good amount below 0db, and get everything fitting together nicely. Maybe eric can chime in here, but personally I don't see the point of mixing with anything on the master.
